Brooks and Nina Buser, serving with New Tribes Mission(NTM), have written an update concerning their ministry with the Yembi Yembi tribe in Papau New Guinea.
The start of the teaching will be moved from the 7th of January to the 21st of January (2 weeks later). The major reason for this is the literacy program. Let me explain. The literacy class has seen a HUGE turn around in the last 3 weeks. Our first class has graduated and now the second and third classes (one morning class and one late afternoon class) are completely full and there are still people standing around watching just to “steal knowledge”. Literacy classes in and of themselves are a big deal, but for Yembi yembi to be joining them with such excitement is completely of the Lord. A couple of the present “church” leaders have been spreading the talk that whoever “joins the literacy program will die, God will strike them down, or the spirits of the dead will rise up and kill them”. We weren’t sure how this would affect their thinking, so we explained to the Yembi’s that they would be able to read God’s talk for themselves and no one could trick them again. All of a sudden the class attendance started a steady rise, and much of the fear in the village was replaced by a desire to “know what God says about them.” The graduation for the afternoon class is around the 14-16th of January, and the morning class is closer to the 21-25th of January. In order to have as many ready, reading, and following along in their Bises translations as possible, we decided to push the teaching back by two weeks.
