Because there are so many options, purchasing a Bible can be very confusing.
Here are a few suggestions and references to help.
Recommended versions:
New American Standard Bible, NASB – good for study, (Frm)
English Standard Version, ESV – recent translation, for study, (Frm)
New King James Version, NKJV – elegant language, (Frm)
New International Version, NIV – good for both readability & study, (Dyn)
1. “Life Application Bible” - helpful notes & commentaries
2. “Archaeological Study Bible” - insights from the latest discoveries
Christian Standard Bible, CSB – new translation, (Opt)
New Living Translation, NLT – easy reading, (Dyn/Par)
The Message, Msg – expressive, contemporary reading, (Par)
(Fm) Formal equivalence - word-for-word; literal accuracy
(Dyn) Dynamic equivalence - phrase-for-phrase; accuracy of thought, not every word
(Opt) Optimum equivalence – attempt at a balance of formal & dynamic approaches
(Par) Paraphrase - “loose” translation, in everyday modern language
